Volunteer Tutor for Primary Age Pupils

Belle Isle Tenant Management Organisation (BITMO) is a locally based organisation, run by tenants of Belle Isle estate. BITMO manages 1900 Leeds City Council homes in Belle Isle. You can read more about us at www.belleisletmo.co.uk

Our Board are concerned about the cost of living crisis and the resulting food and fuel poverty and are also aware of the low level of educational achievement of school students in Belle Lsle.

Please see the following table, taken from the recent Health Needs Assessment of Belle Isle North carried out by Public Health.

To help address these issues we have met with all local schools and agreed some areas where we can support them – for example providing small grants to Windmill Primary and Clapgate Primary schools and funding a homework club in Cockburn John Charles Academy.

In an attempt to address both food poverty and educational under achievement we launched an after-school meal and tutoring session on Tuesday evenings from 3.30-6pm in September 2022. The tutoring is carried out by qualifies, experienced primary school teachers provided by Lextra Learning.

We have the premises, trained and food hygiene qualified volunteers and funds for food for these sessions , and BITMO’s Board have agreed funds bring tutors in to get the project started. We are looking for long term funding partners who can agree to support this project in coming years.

We are looking for volunteer tutors to support primary school aged pupils with reading, English and Maths, under the direction of the tutors.

We offer an induction and support to volunteers, arrange DBS checks and can support with training or qualifications. This is an ideal preparation for anyone considering a career in teaching support.

If you would like more information or would like to take part in this important project in the heart of Belle Isle, please call Peter Sutton at BITMO on 07891 274237.
